Can you believe it’s the end of July?! Neither can we, so let’s make the most of it before we freefall into the second half of the year.

Film

Reality blurs
Jane Schoenbrun’s A24 offering has been heralded as one of the best horror movies not just of the year, but the decade. I Saw The TV Glow is a 90s-set thriller starring HERO 29 cover star Justice Smith (revisit our cover story here) and Brigette Lundy-Paine as two teenagers living in American suburbia who become enthralled by a mysterious late-night TV show which causes their grip on reality to slip, and supernatural activity to take hold.

I Saw The TV Glow is out in cinemas now.

Exhibition

Archive of Dissent
Earlier this week, Whitechapel Gallery opened the doors to one of the most extensive retrospectives of British photomontage artist Peter Kennard to date, aptly titled Archive of Dissent. Taking over three gallery spaces, the exhibition spans the entirety of his five-decade career, offering a timeline of social and political history while spotlighting Kennard’s artistic practice that never failed to counter the status quo.

Peter Kennard: Archive of Dissent runs at Whitechapel Gallery until January 19th 2025, more info here

Festival

Three-day hangover pending
Junction 2 used to be a two-day affair but for 2024, the team behind West London’s esteemed electronic festival have treated us to an extra day of house, techno, lo-fi and everything in between. Expect to see electro heavyweights Honey Dijon and Richie Hawtin alongside the likes of Barry Can’t Swim, OK Williams, Hot Since 82 and Daniel Avery.

Junction 2 will take place this weekend at Boston Manor Park, more info here

Pop-up

Love Bite
New Theory (previously Nouveau if you haven’t been keeping up) has become well known for its summer wine raves and this time the natural wine brand is taking over Peckham Arches for the day. Ruben’s Reubens will be on hand to take care of food as a host of DJs soundtrack the day, and New Theory’s dangerous Love Bite will be on tap ’til close. It’s also free entry, so what have you got to lose?

New Theory’s Wine Party will take place at Peckham Arches, Blenheim Grove, SE15 4QN, more info here

Film

A coming-of-age tale
Pulitzer-winning playwright Annie Baker’s cinematic debut Janet Planet is an intimate portrait of a mother-daughter dynamic. The plot follows eleven-year-old Lacie and her unconventional single mother in the summer of 1991 in rural Massachusetts as they navigate the messiness and beauty of familial relationships. Starring Julianne Nicholson and Zoe Ziegler, Baker’s vision is a raw coming-of-age story which places Lacie’s experience at its heart.

Janet Planet is out in cinemas now.
