Weekend Combo
This week has been all about Frieze, but if you aren’t heading to Regent’s Park this weekend, there are plenty of other ways to fill the days.
Race against the clock
Our HERO 36 cover star, Austin Abrams, is a real shapeshifter. After a recent turn in Resident Evil, the actor’s next project is hitting cinemas, and it couldn’t be more different. Whalefall is based on the 2023 novel by Daniel Kraus; the story follows Jay Gardiner, who goes diving off the coast of California in search of his father’s remains. In a shocking turn of events, he is swallowed whole by a shark and is racing against the clock to escape before his oxygen supply runs out. Revisit our cover story with Austin here.
Whalefall is out in cinemas now.
Fairyland
Since the 1990s, British photographer Tim Walker has been capturing some of the world’s most famous faces in his signature whimsical style. Now, a major showcase of his work has arrived at the National Portrait Gallery, presenting an exploration of queer identity, community, and love.
Tim Walker’s Fairyland: Love and Legends runs at the National Portrait Gallery until 7th February 2027, more info here.
Frieze is here
It’s that time of year again! Frieze has arrived in Regent’s Park, bringing together the biggest and best names in art to the capital. It’s the perfect way to spend an autumnal day in the city, and if you aren’t going to the fair itself, there’s plenty of other things to see – check out our Frieze Week guide here.
Late night agenda
A new programme has arrived at The Standard; the tenth-floor restaurant has launched a new Friday and Saturday music programme running until 2 am, with a schedule of DJ sets and live performances. A perfect accompaniment to Head Chef Paola Arenas’ Mexican cuisine, serving up tortillas, salsas, fried okra and black bean tacos, gildas and mezcal martinis.
The Standard is located at 10 Argyle Street, King’s Cross, WC1H 8EG, more info here.
Light and Magic
This week, Tate Modern opened its doors to Light and Magic, the first major exhibition to explore pictorialism as a global movement. An in-depth retrospective on the history of photography, the show brings together over 200 rare prints by over 80 artists from across the globe.
Light and Magic: The Birth of Art Photography runs at Tate Modern until 21st February 2027, more info here.
Beat Hotel
Curated event series Beat Hotel has been hosting parties across the globe for the past two decades, and most recently they’ve touched down in London. Since Tuesday, Beat Hotel has been hosting a series of events curated in partnership with some of London’s most coveted restaurants: Acme Fire Cult, Tollington’s and Hausu. Tonight, the Beat Hotel’s London residency closes out at the Carpet Shop in Peckham with a late-night takeover from Coco María, John Gómez and Ri Mistry.

A new Sunday roast
Peckham favourite Hausu is celebrating its two-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, a new weekly Sunday lunch has been launched, transforming a traditional roast dinner with whole cuts cooked over fire, roasted and braised, and served sharing-style. In addition, the restaurant has introduced a monthly film screening series taking over the upstairs dining space and a new music programme led by DJ and producer Jay Duncan.
Hausu is located at 11a Station Wy, SE15 4RX, more info here.
