Film

Riz Ahmed is Hamlet
Hot on the heels of Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, a new retelling of Hamlet arrives this weekend. Starring Riz Ahmed in the title role, the action is transposed to contemporary London, moving between the city’s Hindu temples and its grimy underground as Hamlet hunts for the truth behind his father’s death. Ahmed is joined by Joe Alwyn as Laertes, Timothy Spall as Polonius and Art Malik as Claudius in this sleek, neon-tinged take on Shakespeare’s classic.

Exhibition

Inside the studio
Nigerian artist Slawn is returning to Saatchi Yates this month for a different kind of exhibition, choosing not to present finished works, but inviting visitors to experience his studio in real time. Transforming the gallery into a live work space, paintings are created, reworked and imagined as an ongoing process. Throughout the exhibition’s run, Slawn will also be joined by an array of collaborators across art and music, joining him in the space to create work live for the audience.

Slawn’s Studio runs at Saatchi Yates until February 22nd, more info here

Film

A Nicholas Galitzine fantasy
Adapted from Isabel Greenberg’s celebrated graphic novel, 100 Nights of Hero is a fantastical tale that follows a bizarre love triangle between Cherry (Maika Monroe), her maid Hero (Emma Corrin), and the seductive Manfred (Nicholas Galitzine). Directed by Julia Jackman, the cast also features Richard E. Grant, Felicity Jones, and, yes, Charli xcx. The film is a memorably strange take on the fairy tales, full of deeply surreal imagery and characters.

Chadwick Boseman’s Deep Azure makes its UK premiere
Chadwick Boseman is best remembered for his role as Black Panther in the Marvel films, but before he became a major actor, he was a playwright. His most celebrated play, Deep Azure (2005), tells the story of a young Black woman struggling with an eating disorder following the death of her fiancé. More than 20 years after its original premiere, the play is now making its UK debut at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Deep Azure runs at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse until April 11th. Tickets are available here.

Titled A Fair Day, the black-and-white series focuses entirely on Parr’s portraits of the West of Ireland, documenting the ‘Fair days’ when communities would gather for trade, entertainment and religious observance.
