Weekend Combo
Still, ‘Repo Man’ by Alex Cox, 1984
It’s time we all admit summer is basically over. September is here and the nights are already getting shorter but below we’ve picked out a few things to fill your weekend amidst mourning long balmy evenings at the pub *sheds tear*.
A story of hope
American auteur Greg Kwedar’s latest A24 drama is a fictionalised story based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts programme in Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. Dissecting the transformative powers of art and the deep-rooted flaws in the American prison system, Kwedar’s story follows a group of inmates involved in the creation of their own original theatrical production, Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code. Keeping the story as true to its roots as possible, Colman Domingo and Paul Raci star alongside a cast of former inmates who are alumni of the programme.
Sing Sing is out in cinemas now.

Don’t open the trunk…
Alex Cox’s cult film Repo Man stars Emilio Estevez as a young punk in LA who works as a car repo man on the hunt for a Chevrolet Malibu that may or may not have an alien in the boot. It’s an utterly bonkers film that no simple plot description could do justice to. Buoyed by the performances of Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton (a rare outwardly comic role for the great stone faced man of cinema), Repo Man is a mix of punk, science fiction, and black comedy that still exists almost entirely in a category of its own forty years after its release. Rebel Reel Cine Club are screening the movie this Friday alongside a set by renowned DJ Adamski’s new band.
Repo Man is showing at the Rio in Dalston as part of the Rebel Reel Cine Club on Friday at 9pm, tickets here

Sunday’s are for wine
Dara Klein of Tiella is currently in residence at The Compton Arms, taking over their kitchen to bring rustic Italian cuisine to North London. Taking inspiration from her heritage, Kelin’s menu focuses on hand-rolled pasta and quality braised meats to create dishes such as tagliatelle alle vongole, ciceri e tria and chopped beef filet with pecorino and pane guttiau. Although we’d recommend trying Klein’s delights every day of the week, this Sunday sees the chef collaborate with her father Richard Klein whose renowned Artigiano Imports has heralded him as one of New Zealand’s most prominent importers of Italian natural wine. Having selected six wines from Les Caves de Pyrene, each bottle has been chosen to perfectly pair with Dara’s menu to enjoy her food in all it’s glory.
The Compton Arms is located at 4 Compton Ave, N1 2XD, more info here.
