Artist of the Open Road
Japan’s Edo period – from 1603 to 1868 – is remembered widely to have been a time of civic peace and development, which allowed a myriad of art forms to emerge and prosper. One of the most prominent figures of that era, Utagawa Hiroshige, documented the country through his artwork populated with fashionable figures, vibrant city views, remote landscapes and interpretations of the natural world. Last week, the British Museum opened its first exhibition on Hiroshige and the first on the artist in London for more than a quarter of a century, offering up a career-spanning retrospective of one of Japan’s most revered painters.

Latent Relics
A new exhibition by British artists Dylan Doe and Jack Evans is taking over North London’s Somers Gallery. Titled Latent Relics, thirteen new and unseen works from the duo spanning painting, sculpture, and installation transform the gallery into a speculative domestic space. A metaphor for one’s psychological landscape, the work invites viewers to question how future generations may view the relics of our current time.

Latent Relics runs at Somers Gallery until June 7th, more info here

A Greek feast
Raised between Athens and Mykonos, chef Yiannis Mexis has recently opened the doors to his Greek-inspired eatery on Southwark Street. Bringing a traditional taverna to Borough, the restaurant features an open kitchen, bar and an outdoor terrace, where a Sunday feast will be held on weekends. The menu focuses on utilising hyper-seasonal produce to build a selection of small plates and sharing dishes such as mussel saganaki with toasted bread, charred aubergine with tomato stew and smoked mizithra and spanakopita with fragrant herbs and barrel-aged feta.

Cocktails for your spirit
Over in Mayfair, the opulent Pine Bar at The Biltmore hotel has introduced a new cocktail range, Synthèse, that offers very interesting and very tasty twists on classic flavours. Drawing from the four elements – Fire, Earth, Water and Air – the menu speaks to your inner psyche. Perhaps you’re into a fiery cocktail with notes of Sichuan pepper, Ancho Reyes and tropical fruits? Or maybe you’re calm like the ocean and appreciate seaweed tincture mixed with coconut water? Earth cocktails mix beetroot, lapsang tea and spiced pineapple, while Air infuses gin with jasmine tea, chamomile and Yuzushu. Not only do they taste amazing, they also look incredible – it’s a full sensory experience. Plus, the whole menu is also available as mini sip-sized gimlets, so you can experience them all without forgetting the first ones…

Follow The Pine Bar on Instagram, and book here.
