HERO Framed is our ongoing series platforming up-and-coming photographers capturing the world around them through a unique lens.

“I recently visited Birmingham for a funeral and surprisingly found there these beautiful twin teenage brothers,” photographer Tom Marshak tells us, proving that he’s never on off-mode. Always on the hunt for peculiar happenings and moments of beauty, the Tel Aviv-born, London-based artist recently won the British Journal of Photography ‘Portrait of Humanity’ award – using his craft to elevate the everyday, creating vivid stories that stretch far beyond the image.

Name: Tom Marshak

Age: 41

Location: London

Camera of choice: Contax or Leica.

Preferred subject: I shoot mostly everything around portraits, documentary projects, music and fashion.

Favourite time of the day to shoot: Early morning but not too early, just when it gets a bit contrasting.

Most recent photo you took: I recently visited Birmingham for a funeral and surprisingly found there these beautiful twin teenage brothers.

How you first became interested in photography: Since I was young I used to take pics with small point-and-shoot analogue cameras with my friends while we used to go skateboarding, I didn’t let go of the camera since and with time it became my profession and biggest hobby.

Biggest influence: It would have to be Weegee for his groundbreaking and bold street photography and the aesthetic of Irving Penn.

Favourite photography series/book: A recent series I really liked was Coco Capitan’s Kids of Kyoto.

Current project/s: I recently finished a short film and stills project in Croatia, documenting an ancient pagan ceremony. I am very passionate about storytelling and try to travel whenever I can to different locations and tell places and people’s stories through my lens.
