Think black nylon, think Prada. When Miuccia Prada joined her family’s business in 1970, she took the silhouette of the brand’s leather luggage goods and offered a modernist spin, designing waterproof backpacks crafted from specially-made, water-resistant nylon called pocone. From that point, Prada became synonymous for its luxury nylon.

Now comes a new nylon revolution, in the form of Prada’s Re-Nylon collection, a sustainable line created entirely out of regenerated nylon obtained through the recycling and purification process of plastic waste collected from oceans, fishing nets, and textile fibre waste. Kickstarting Selfridges‘ new sustainability initiative, Project Earth, the London department store now presents a global first-preview of Prada’s trailblazing, sustainable collection, offering customers the chance to buy pieces before its global release next month.

Lanched as part of Prada’s Re-Nylon initiative, which was established in 2019, the new collection offers signature Prada pieces cast in this innovative new fabric. Boasting men’s and womenswear alongside accessories, from bucket hats to backpacks, each piece has been created “through a process of depolymerization and re-polymerisation,” which means the “yarn can be recycled indefinitely, with no loss of quality.”

Taking over the Selfridges Corner Shop, Prada has creating an immersive experience that evokes the sustainability principles at the heart of the collection. Here, short films produced by National Geographic play on scenographic multiscreen large-scale arches. Shot entirely black and white to echo Prada’s black regenerated nylon, each film underscores a section of the supply-chain behind unique projects such as this, taking viewers on a trip across every continent.

“Prada Re-Nylon project brings circularity to life by teaming creativity with sustainable product innovation in the Selfridges Corner Shop,” says Selfridges Executive Buying & Merchandising Director, Sebastian Manes. “Prada brings vision to all elements of its business – sustainability is no exception – I am delighted that through this unique concept developed for our sustainability initiative Project Earth, we are able to share that vision with our customers.”
