Frieze week is over and a sense of calm has descended upon the capital, despite the weather being grim, we’ve rounded up a few things worth leaving the house for this weekend. 

Psycho Killer
Big dance moves and bigger suits at the ready, A24’s re-release of Jonathan Demme’s seminal Talking Heads concert film, Stop Making Sense, is here. Shot over three nights at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles in 1984, the film is far more than a gig, it’s a musical drama brimming with electricity, dynamism and some of the best songs ever written. Set to highly-choreographed performances, each song becomes a unique microdrama with David Bryne as the star of the show – his limbs moving in ways we thought only Elaine Benes knew how. Go see it at the cinema and get the whole room dancing.

Sound and Vision
Immersive art collective United Visual Artists is staging their largest-ever exhibition to date at 180 Studios. Marking the artist’s 20th anniversary, UVA: Synchronicity features eight never-before-seen, large-scale immersive works challenging our perception of reality. Including brand-new collaborations with the likes of Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja and legendary bioacoustician Bernie Krause, Synchronicity explores psychoanalysis, animal sounds and celestial bodies through dizzying light installations and all-encompassing audio-visual experiences.

Dance yourself warm
It’s bloody cold and it’s bloody miserable outside, so get inside – Hackney’s Moth Club, specifically – and get your body moving to the raucous sound of Bristol four-piece Heavy Lungs. Loud, frantic, intense, the band are masters of making music that grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you into action. While they formed in 2017, this year saw the band release their debut studio record, All Gas No Brakes. Of the record, the band said, “It’s a dancer and it’s a prancer, and hopefully it’s a life enhancer” – we couldn’t say it any better.

Rum punch, anyone? 
Taking over a corner of Hackney Road for one week only, Casa Brugal is inspired by all things rum. Coming from the makers of Dominican rum brand Brugal, the East London spot has brought together local makers to create a one-stop shop.  Opening in the morning with a signature Dominican coffee blend and Lily Vanilli’s Brugal-inspired cake, later on, you can book a workshop with Earl of East for a candle-making class inspired by rum scents. As the evening draws in, the space will transform into a cocktail bar offering a selection of Brugal rum-infused beverages.

Bargains! 
Best known for her frothy tulle and hand-smocked taffeta dresses, Molly Goddard is hosting a sample sale this Saturday. Taking place at her London studio in Cambridge Heath, get down early to grab one of her signature chunky knits or bag a tutu-like skirt ahead of the festive season – whatever takes ya fancy!

Molly Goddard’s sample sale will take place on October 21st at  223 Cambridge Heath Road, E2 0EL from 11 am – 7 pm. 

Everywhere and Nowhere
Simeon Barclay is taking over both Gathering and Workplace with his latest solo exhibition, At Home, Everywhere and Nowhere. Comprised of large-scale sculpture, installation and wall-based work collaboratively shown across both galleries, the London-based artist is exploring his own relationship with culture through the lens of fashion, identity and image making. Taking pop culture artefacts and turning them on their heads, Barclay presents a larger-than-life inflatable sculpture of Donald Duck, references a 1980 Elton John performance in New York City, while stills from Hedi Slimane’s Celine FW23 fashion campaign are spliced and chopped to give them a whole new meaning.

Thick crust and heaps of cheese
A coffee shop by day and a Detroit-style pizza and wine bar by night, the newly opened Ria’s is a deep-dish pizza haven tucked away behind an unassuming white door in Notting Hill. While home-baked cookies in the morning and focaccia sandwiches for lunch are a must-try, the evening menu is truly where it’s at. Serving up pizza pies topped with roasted king prawns, vegan nduja and whipped ricotta and tomato alongside a selection of small plates including Cobble Lane cold cuts and haggis pops topped with red wine and whisky syrup. A wide selection of natural wines is also on offer to wash it all down and the Affogato is pretty damn good too.

Posh tacos
Or maybe you’re craving some heart-warming Mexican food? If so, Chayote is the place for you. Newly opened on St Katharine Docks, Tower Hill, this new eatery led by ex-Barrafina Head Chef Tomasz Baranski takes Mexican staples and elevates them to beautiful, tasty-as-hell dishes. Grab yourself a chinken tinga taco, or an oxtail version with chicharrón, pickled onion and signature pineapple salsa. Iberico pork cheeks are a must, as is the hake a la veracruzana. We’re talking tastados, tacos, quesadillas and mezcal – all the brilliant things that make South American an A* food and drink destination.
