Groundbreaking
Does the devil actually wear Dolce & Gabbana? It could be the case. At yesterday’s D&G show, there was a round of applause when Meryl Streep, in character as the ice queen magazine editor Miranda Priestly, entered the showspace – Stanley Tucci as Nigel by her side – and took her seat in the front row. In a glorious bit of seating politics, Streep sat directly across from Anna Wintour, prompting a subtle smile.
This season, Domenico and Stefano were a little bit sleepy. Throughout a vast number of looks, the designers reimagined classic men’s pyjamas as, well, every item of clothing you can imagine. Shirts and trousers came loose and languid, cut in airy proportions and dressed in stripes or dainty, childlike prints. Soft, rounded collars peeked out from under evening jackets, as though hastily thrown on before stepping out to grab your takeaway.
It wasn’t all buttoned-up, however. The boys had to bring some of their trademark sexiness to the catwalk. The mood shifted fast: garters and lace lingerie appeared as full looks, corsetry cinched waists, and knee-high stockings climbed up legs. Clasps clicked, lace tied, and suddenly the collection was less about getting tucked in and more about staying up late into the night.
