Every duality

Dries Van Noten was low fringes and furry stoles
Fashion | 29 February 2024

The invite for Dries Van Noten’s FW24 show was a white rectangle of card that had a lock of hair taped to it. Knowing Dries, that could have meant anything. But for this show, it was a sign of empowerment. The first line of the show’s notes went, “She dares to cut her own fringe.” We must presume that this lock of hair was that very fringe.

Dries’ show was a flurry of colours and styles and it felt like every form of femininity was displayed across 67 looks. Overcoats and tailoring were the order of the day, along with that certain silhouette that has become very familiar over the past few fashion weeks – a huge coat worn over blue jeans. One could say that the 2000s are back, but Dries defined that decade so well that you could say he is just referencing himself.

Naturally, there was extravagance. Oversized jumpers appeared to be made out of tinsel (or astroturf), gigantic furry stoles looked as if a whole animal were draped around one’s neck, and blazers had arms that were bedecked and bejewelled in enough beads and trinkets to put a haberdashery out of business.
