Erasing the norm

Dries Van Noten SS24: untraditional tradition – abstracted and remixed
By Barry Pierce | Fashion | 28 September 2023

In a reflection of his menswear collection in June, Dries Van Noten’s SS24 womenswear collection further meditated on ideas of masculinity through clothing. An easy enough task when designing a menswear collection, but what happens when you attempt it with womenswear? Well, you get oversized tuxedo jackets and full, glorious denim dresses.

A theme throughout the show was the manipulation of silhouettes. We saw blazers that were elongated to knee-length, shirts draped from under cropped jackets, waists were cinched in some places and nonexistent elsewhere. This theme mixed well with another of the show’s focuses — sportswear. The familiar block striping of rugby shirts acted as a motif across the collection, be it on coats or joggers. Traditional English knits in the form of V-neck vests and deconstructed, cross-body jumpers. “Notions of tradition re-imagined and re-energised,” read the show notes, emphasising the Dries codes.
