Downtown defiance

Fashion East: Matty Bovan SS17
By Katie Alcock | Fashion | 20 September 2016

In a riot of shimmering tulle and seaweed netting, Matty Bovan sent a wave of models down the runway in homage to 80s downtown New York. Drawing life from the likes of Maripol and Stephen Sprouse, the designer’s looks were framed with graffiti-style haircuts and Nina Hagen inspired make-up. Styled with customised Coach satchels, his pieces warped the models silhouettes, dripping shredded lurex and swathes of fluoro fabrics.

Speaking about the importance of creative expression in times when people are short on cash and hope, Bovan’s collection stood theatrically defiant.
