California Poetry
It’s 90s California: the sun is shining, Tupac is still with us and US designer Doni Nahmias is a young lad with big dreams. For his FW23 collection – California Poetry – Nahmias hit play on a West Coast beat straight from his own adolescence. Transposing a hip-hop ease through sophisticated design techniques and fabrications, silhouettes relaxed into their role, allowing fuzzy bucket hats, graffiti decorations and folky knits to thrive. Hand-painted California poppies created vibrant scenes across silk tailoring, oversized blazers mixed with baggy skate fits and bunny ear hats featured throughout. A fuzzy faux fur jacket look paired with distressed jeans and a fluffy animal print bucket hat was very Tommy Lee, while puffy coats over American football jerseys hit hard. The collection also featured a collaboration with controversial rapper Kodak Black, which saw stream-of-consciousness lyrics translated from Kodak’s personal notebook onto fabric.
