“You know what I want, to know the secrets in your heart,” sing Warpaint over chugging drums and snarling guitars in Whiteout, the latest track release from the band’s new album. A signature combination of hypnotic lyrics and unsettling harmonies have come to define the LA band, whose new album Heads Up is out this Friday.

In anticipation we asked Sydney-hailing drummer Stella Mozgawa to craft us a playlist, and she obliged with a ripper. From the inimitable Nina Simone (“No one can touch her”) to the ecstasy of Chaka Khan, from the afro soul of Stanislas Toho to techno maestro Anthony Shake Shakir, think of it as a beat-rich glimpse into the shards that crystallise Warpaint’s sound. The beady eyed will pick up a missing Avalanches track, Mozgawa’s picks having knocked even YouTube for a six. Commit to the cause and dip out to Spotify, the full picture is always worth it.

Do What You Gotta Do by Nina Simone
“Kanye just sampled this gem, it’s a deeply honest proclamation of love. No one can touch her.”

Sunshine by The Avalanches
“This whole album has been on repeat since it came out. So glad The Avalanches are back. This song has a lovely, dreamy wonk to it.”

Morning – Techno Primitiv by Chris & Cosey
“My friend Cate introduced me to this track, a nice bent number. Chris and Cosey were members of Throbbing Gristle and this is a nice top endy, ambient number.”

My Love Is Alive by Chaka Khan
“From her “I feel for you” record, there’s no doubt which decade this album was made in. It sounds like producers having a field day with new drum machines and sequences. An explosive cover of the Gary Wright track.”

Terre-basse by Henri Texier
“A beautiful, moody track from a bass wielding master.”

Yallow 2 by Stanislas Tohon
“Amazing afro soul track backed by Vis A Vis from Ghana.”

Pastoral by Moondog
“No playlist is complete without this track. One of my all time favourite pieces of recorded music.”

Anthony Shake Shakir Meets BBC by Anthony Shake Shakir
“From a great remix record with some incredible tracks, hard to choose just one. The original Shangaan Electro record and this one.”

Cool Cat by Queen
“Apparently Bowie sang backing vocals on this, as well as a spoken word interlude in the middle 8. He wasn’t into it so they pulled it days before the release. If anyone has the original cut of this, please do let me know.”

Dial Me In by Factory Floor
“Saw these guys play in London the other week – incredible band. So much elemental energy, so exciting!”

‘Heads Up’ by Warpaint is out Friday, 23rd September on Rough Trade.
