Fun police
Metropolitan Police has clarified that the law regarding the use of Segways in public spaces (that is, you can’t use them on the path or road) also encompasses the recently popular ‘self-balancing, hoverboard scooters’. Cool, thanks guys.
Alongside Whiz Khalifa (who was earlier in the year arrested for riding a hoverboard in LAX airport), HERO 13 cover star Justin Bieber was one of the first celebs to be seen getting around on Back To The Future vibe scooter five months ago on Instagram. Post after post he was seen coasting by and now everyone’s coasting, but not for long – unless you want a fine.
Section 72 of the Highway Act 1835 (yes, that’s a law more than 180 years old) in England and Wales means these babies are not allowed on pavements or roads in the UK – only on private property, with the permission of the landowner.
As for real Michael J. Fox hoverboard realities, in the summer Lexus unveiled their new hoverboard which uses superconductors – that are cooled with liquid nitrogen, hence the white mist – and magnets to hover over a metallic surface. Not quite the real deal, but one step closer to coasting right over a fountain. Here’s hoping that by the time we can, a few laws have been brought back to the future…
