Before Pacha residencies and Ushuaïa all-nighters, Ibiza was a haven for hippie hedonism. The 1970s saw the Balearic Islands’ popularity grow among European travellers, intrigued by the White Isle’s easygoing lifestyle, golden beaches and thriving nightlife. In 1976, German-born photojournalist Walter Rudolph headed to Ibiza on assignment while working with the likes of Thomson (TUI) and Iberia to promote emerging holiday destinations, shooting on colour Kodak 35mm film, Rudolph unknowingly captured the island at one of its most pivotal moments, just before the world became aware of its charm.

Rudolph documented the island’s energy with a natural ease, snapping shots of Fiat 600s lining cobbled paths, window shoppers dressed in bell-bottom jeans, seal shows at the legendary Fantasilandia zoo and nights at the Penta Club. Now immortalised in a monograph titled Walter Rudolph, Ibiza 1976, the book was published and edited by Ibiza-based gallery Agony + Ecstasy. Below, the space’s founder, Emma Salahi, tells us the stories behind five of her favourite images in Rudolph’s archive.

Walter Rudolph, Sunburnt, Ses Salines, Ibiza, 1976
“This photograph is one of my favourites from the archive. It’s quietly powerful and sexy. Taken on the beach of Ses Salines in Ibiza, I originally thought it was a beach in Formentera because of the white sands, but I was corrected last year! I adore the glaze coming off this woman’s body, tentatively sunburnt!”

Walter Rudolph, Fantasylandia, Ibiza, 1976
Fantasylandia – the only zoo in Ibiza during the seventies, which remarkably hosted live seal shows. Rudolph captures the essence of a glorious, clear blue day and the original branding of the zoo, which pops with highly saturated hues. It is nostalgic and playful in equal measure, and I deeply enjoy knowing the island was home to seals at some point in history.”

Walter Rudolph, The Montesol Hotel, Ibiza, 1976
“The cover of the book captures everything you need to know about seventies Ibiza. Many will recognise the former terrace of the grand Montesol Hotel in Vara de Rey in Ibiza Town. Though the iconic terrace no longer exists, the hotel still remains as one of the oldest heritage hotels on the island. I adore the movement in this photo, the man reading his newspaper and the overall feel of this image. It is so powerful, it had to be the cover of the book.”

Kegel-Club Burggau auf dem Weg nach Ibiza, 1980er. Kegel-Club Burggau on the way to Ibiza, 1980s.

Walter Rudolph, The Bowling Team, Ibiza, 1976
“I find this image fascinating, it is incredibly entertaining to look at it with so many elements to ponder over. I find the original interior of an aeroplane in the seventies quite thrilling, and slightly envious that they had so much space in it. Quite the opposite to a Ryanair flight to Ibiza these days!”

Herrchen und Hund entspannen am Strand, Ibiza 1976. Master and dog relaxing at the beach; Ibiza 1976.

Walter Rudolph, Siesta, Ibiza, 1976
“Sleeping dogs lie. I love this image as it simply screams Spanish summertime. A man dozes off in his chair (probably during a siesta) with his very tired dog on a beach in Ibiza. Walter Rudolph captures the nonchalance of day-to-day life on the island, with pangs of subtle humour, as the couple walks past, seeing this unfolding. Bliss.”
