10th Anniversary
Back in 2016, Loewe introduced the Craft Prize, and since then, it has become one of the leading awards for craftsmanship worldwide. Created as a tribute to the Spanish brand’s beginnings as a craft workshop in 1846, the prize is now in its tenth year. This edition also marks a first for the house’s new creative directors, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, taking their seats on the jury for this year’s award.
The 30 finalists in this year’s cohort have “approached making as a careful negotiation between balance, instability and tension,” delivering artworks which span mediums of woodwork, textiles, ceramics, metal, glass, furniture and jewellery. From 5,100 submissions across the globe, the selected finalists represent 19 countries and regions, with names to note including Berlin-based jeweller Coco Sung, British ceramicist Susan Halls, Japanese tapestry artist Misako Nakahira and multi-disciplinary Nigerian artist Fadekemi Ogunsanya.
The winner will be announced on May 12th and will be awarded a prize of €50,000; then all 30 of the finalists’ works will go on to be exhibited on display at the National Gallery Singapore for a month-long residency. An initiative designed to bolster the next generation of creatives, Loewe will bring these visionary works to a global stage, furthering their artist relationships with a newly launched scheme to support the alumni of the Craft Prize. Partnering with luxury travel brand Belmond, the Loewe Foundation will create three two-month residencies at La Residencia, a Belmond Hotel, in Mallorca, where artists will be invited to create new artwork working in conjunction with Spain’s ever-evolving cultural landscape.
