What a feast
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover by Peter Greenaway, 1989
MUBI have curated a feast for the senses with their latest programme of cinematic offerings. Titled Let’s Eat: Food and Film, the British streaming platform is celebrating cinema’s most memorable meals, dissecting how filmmakers use food as a medium to express a myriad of human emotions. And there’s plenty to get you teeth stuck into. Be it the iconic Katz’s Deli scene in When Harry Met Sally… or Jules and Vincent Vega’s “Royale with cheese” conversation in Pulp Fiction, food has subliminally underscored some of cinema’s most memorable moments. MUBI’s programme features a selection of titles, including Winter in Sokcho by Koya Kamura, The Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra, Flux Gourmet by Peter Strickland and The Taste of Things by Trần Anh Hùng.
Big Night by Campbell Scott and Stanley Tucci, 1996
Brought to life in an all-day celebration at Selfridges on 20th November, nine cult classics from the programme will be showing in the department store’s cinema. Off-screen, a host of other events will be taking place throughout the day, including a ‘Chefs on screen’ talk, a film quiz and a bespoke menu curated by chef and culinary artist Heal Goblin (Nil Mutluer). An exhibition of the new MUBI NOTEBOOK edition titled Spaghetti Shoestring will also be unveiled, featuring unseen archive imagery of Alfred Hitchcock’s household recipes – it’s a one-stop shop for food and film obsessives.
