Fashion Becomes Art

A Schiaparelli retrospective is coming to London

As one of the most storied fashion houses in the business, we’re surprised it hasn’t happened sooner, but the first-ever UK exhibition devoted to Schiaparelli is arriving at London’s Victoria & Albert museum next spring. A retrospective spanning the brand’s founding by Elsa Schiaparelli in 1927 through to its current day embodiment under the helm of creative director Daniel Roseberry.

Known for opulent craft and ethereal creative visions, the exhibition will pay homage to Elsa Schiaparelli’s position as a female entrepreneur, charting her rise to prominence across Paris, London and New York between the two world wars and up to her retirement in 1954. Showcasing famous designs while also giving recognition to her lesser-known works across fashion, art and performance, with a focus on the London branch of Schiaparelli and its eclectic clients.

Comprising over 200 objects, including garments, accessories, jewellery, paintings, photographs, sculpture, furniture, perfumes and archive material, the extensive ephemera on display will seek to reflect Schiaparelli’s immeasurable creativity. Highlights are set to include the infamous ‘Skeleton’ dress and the ‘Tears’ dress conceived in collaboration with surrealist pioneer Salvador Dalí, alongside Roseberry’s 21st-century vision of haute couture worn by the likes of Bella Hadid on the Cannes red carpet. Artworks by Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Man Ray will punctuate the walls of the V&A’s Sainsbury Gallery, offering an insight into the house’s longstanding ties to the art world.
