Villain or Femme Fatale?
Demna may have announced his departure from Balenciaga just last week, but the Georgian designer shows no signs of slowing down during his last months at the house. As one of his final projects as creative director, the brand’s newly released summer campaign will certainly be one to remember.
Lensed by British artist and photographer Nadia Lee Cohen, the shoot mimics the set-up of an Old Hollywood screen test, complete with a curtained backdrop, clapperboard and every archetypal film character you can think. Now, it’s not just anyone slipping into the skin of The Femme Fatale, The Villain or The Girl Next Door, it’s a star-studded line-up of recognisable faces such as Kyle MacLachlan, Rachel Sennott, Linda Honeyman, Sunnyi Melles, Mark Eydelshteyn and Georgia Ford.
In front of Cohen’s lens, the cast’s metamorphosis into cinematic tropes exemplifies the intersection of clothing and performance, emphasising the role that dressing up plays in defining a character, using Demna’s SS25 collection as a perfect example of how the right set of trompe-l’oeil lingerie or Dracula-esque leather trench can have the ability to transform.
