The best years

Stefan Cooke x Solid Homme is an ode to 00s indie

London-based design duo Stefan Cooke and Jake Burt of Stefan Cooke have collaborated with Seoul-based brand Solid Homme on a menswear capsule that combines both brands’ sensibilities while paying homage to the subcultural influences of the design duo’s adolescence.

During the making of the collection, Cooke and Burt worked to a studio soundtrack of three tracks on rotation during their formative teenage years (circa 2009): These New Puritans’ Drum Courts, Redlights by Salem and Wooden Box by Factory Floor. Both Cooke and Burt played in local bands in their hometowns, and music played a key part during these years, particularly the experimental rock scenes of New York and Maine. This Americana influence also came via the American Apparel hype of the time, which we can all resonate with.

For their Solid Homme collection, the designers fuse this East Coast attitude with classic silhouettes from Solid’s archive, creating a wardrobe that speaks of self-expression and subversive energy.

The fourteen-piece capsule sees washed-out denim shirts and jeans punctured with enamel studs, a direct reference to the rivets on 15th Century armour from London’s Wallace Collection that the duo uncovered during their design process. (“The graphic language of this collaborative label is reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century tomb” – reads the collection notes.) A plush blouson-style leather bomber and classic workwear jackets form the collection’s outerwear offering, accompanied by a series of understated knits and tie-dye hoodies. True to the Americana mood board, t-shirts adopt American football jersey silhouettes and plaid shirts are accented with silver studs, while a shearling-lined pilot helmet is folded to become a saddle bag.
