Hedi Slimane’s American West
Yesterday’s premiere of Celine’s FW24 collection film, Symphonie Fantastique, saw Hedi Slimane expand his ongoing documentation of American West Coast culture. Shot in the middle of California’s Mojave desert and featuring shots of Cadillacs and cowboys (Brayden Liberio), Slimane’s vision celebrated California’s historical culture and community. In light of Slimane’s latest vision for Celine, we revisit the designer’s 30-page American Cowboy photo essay published in HERO 9, American Cowboy, which saw him document modern-day working Californian cowboys and ranchhands.

His first collaboration with HERO, Slimane captured an extensive and visually-stunning photographic essay of the American cowboy. Donning the ubiquitous uniform of stetsons, denim and flannel, Slimane’s subjects buckle up for a rodeo, wrestle with cattle, and ride across the vast plains, forming a captivating portrait of the contemporary cowboy lifestyle.
