Bound by a shared Irish heritage, Eileen Gray has always held a special place in Richard Malone’s heart. In celebration of Gray’s legacy as one of the most renowned pioneers of the Modernist movement, Malone brings together a line-up of seven multidisciplinary artists to commemorate the brilliance of Irish craft. Having debuted last June in France and then travelling on for a second stint in Dublin, Malone’s celebrated group exhibit Making and Momentum opens for its third and final chapter in their shared home town of Wexford.

Curated by Malone himself, the exhibition showcases the diversity of Ireland’s prominent talents, featuring the likes of ceramicist Sarah Flynn, abstract painter Mainie Jellett and Venice Biennale contributor Niamh O’Malley. In conjunction with the exhibition’s final run, the designer has announced a series of Artist Prizes offering a foundation for the next generation of aspiring Irish creatives. Awarded to eight chosen artists on the premise of the distinctiveness of their own visual language, the awards aim to spotlight how creativity adds to the wider culture and the importance of accessibility to all.

“Making and Momentum aims to encourage engagement and discourse with contemporary makers, artists and artisans,” says Malone. “It is vital to support, encourage and sustain these practices in which so much of our quiet culture, and potential future, can exist and thrive. These techniques and processes and communities are part of our present, not our history.”

Making and Momentum: In Conversation with Eileen Gray is on view at Wexford County Council in Carricklawn, Ireland until 13th May.
