Celine Haute Maroquinerie: Hedi Slimane’s ode to couture leathercraft
By Alex James Taylor | Fashion | 13 April 2022

Hedi Slimane’s Celine is meticulous in spirit and craft. Exemplifying this, the designer launches a new Haute Maroquinerie range offering exquisite, made-to-order artisan leather goods and bags – embracing the house’s couture savoir-faire.

An ode to the art of maroquinerie – leather-making – at the heart of the concept are the maison’s signature bags: the 16 and the Triomphe. Crafted using the finest leather hide and accented with 18-karat gold, the bags are fully customisable with pavé diamonds or solitaire settings in tune with the customer’s personality, and each signed with the Celine Haute Maroquinerie signature.

Only once an order is placed will the bag go into development, and each will be created by a single artisan: the 16 taking seventeen hours of workmanship, the Triomphe taking twelve. Once finished, the product is delivered to its new owner in a custom-made eucalyptus coffer, panelled with black leather.

This dedication to couture leathercraft is a celebration of Céline Vipiana, who founded the house as a made-to-measure haute couture shoe service for children before expanding to leather goods and accessories, and then womenswear with her 1968 ‘Sportswear’ collection. Celine’s Haute Maroquinerie continues Slimane’s commitment to the maison’s couture roots, following the reintroduction of Celine Couture and the introduction of Celine Haute Parfumerie.
