Anime-zing

LOEWE’s second Studio Ghibli collaboration pays tribute to Spirited Away

If you’re a child of the millennium, or spent your early teens on Tumblr in the early 2010s, chances are you’re a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. This tale of enduring friendships, greed and overcoming surreal adversity has touched us all in one way or another, so much so that Loewe is paying tribute to the iconic anime film with a striking capsule collection of their own.

It suffices to say Jonathan Anderson is a huge anime fan. Following in the footsteps of his 2021 ode to My Neighbour Totoro and The Loewe Foundation’s three-year sponsorship of cultural activities at The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, the designer’s second Studio Ghibli tribute aims to spotlight Spirited Away‘s most iconic characters, including our determined, ten-year-old protagonist Chihiro, campy sorceress Yubaba, those tiny soot sprites and the misunderstood cannibal Kaonashi (a.k.a. No-Face).

Bringing Miyazaki’s wonderfully graphic world to life across a range of ready to wear with the help of photographer Juergen Teller, Anderson splatters Chihiro and the rest of the cast across intricately woven blankets and scarves and atop starry-skied versions of the labels signature Amazona, Puzzle and Flamenco bags. Silhouettes are oversized and loose, using Japanese textile techniques such as boro to create a patchworked mosaic of tactile fabric splendour with nods to the films many hidden gems. We suppose fashion doesn’t get any better than being able to drape your favourite movie around your arms…

LOEWE x Spirited Away is available for purchase from the 7th January 2022 on loewe.com
