Ding Ding
Famous for creating surreal paintings featuring his own hysterically laughing face on repeat, last year saw contemporary Chinese artist Yue Minjun collaborate with Comme des Garçons Shirt, plastering his cackling heads all over the brand’s tailored garments.
This week the collaboration has arrived on the ground floor of Dover Street Market London in the form of a boxing ring installation with mannequins wearing the CDG Shirt x Yue Minjun pieces – two mid-fight while others cheer them on.
It’s an installation that no doubt appeals to Minjun’s irreverent sense of humour. Finding inspiration in the mid-point between pop art and surrealism, the artist imbues his work with witty social commentary in an attempt to understand the world by making it even stranger. As he says himself: “My work is to do with the fundamental agony of being human and the sense of confusion that comes with living in society.”
