Story of an Artist
Supreme has announced a new collection with late, cult US musician Daniel Johnston.
The latest in a long line of musician collaborations for the streetwear brand – from Black Sabbath to Public Enemy – sees Supreme celebrate Johnston’s characterful illustrations that so perfectly echoed his intimate, lo-fi home recordings. Having sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 58 after a life-long struggle with mental conditions, Johnston left behind a poignant and treasured legacy that inspired many musicians including Beck and Kurt Cobain (who once described him as “the best songwriter on earth” and famously wore Johnston’s alien t-shirt to the ’92 MTV Awards).
This isn’t the first time Supreme and Johnston have worked together, having previously collaborated on a capsule for SS15, amongst others. Paying homage to the musician, this team-up sees Supreme repurpose Johnston’s drawings across a range of pieces: an embroidered work jacket, plaid shirt, rayon shirt, embroidered work pant, hooded sweatshirt, three tees and a beanie.
