Through his debut collection since taking the helm at Camper, Finnish designer Achilles Ion Gabriel has unveiled his vision for the brand, honouring its Mallorcan heritage with bold tones and surreal aesthetics.

First shown in Paris last week, the FW20 collection is the first significant indication of Gabriel’s intended course for the Spanish brand. As creative director, he not only oversees the global brand image but is responsible for leading the product design team and establishing the creative strategy for all brand communication.

Whether we will see any radical departure from the brand’s signature displays of striking colour and bold forms remains unclear, but if this debut collection is anything to go by, the future looks bright – quite literally. From buttercup-yellow work boots to liver-coloured walking shoes and a pair of heels that playfully mirror the colouring of a (perfectly ripe) banana, Gabriel looks set to continue the best of Camper with one eye firmly set on its surreal island roots.
