An echo of his LA home – a forever inspiration – Mike Amiri’s collections blend reality and fantasy; dreaming up settings so realised you can step into them. This season, we were invited to Chateau Amiri, an imagined hotel rooted in the mythology of Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont, a building designed for tranquillity and steeped in rock’n’roll notoriety: James Dean jumped out of a window to audition for Rebel Without a Cause; Gram Parsons called it home on and off for four years; John Belushi died in bungalow three; Jim Morrison fell swinging between windows; Warren Beatty overstayed his welcome; Pink Floyd held skinny-dipping parties; Led Zeppelin tore through hallways on motorcycles; and Courtney Love got banned – multiple times.
But this isn’t the Chateau Marmont, it’s Chateau Amiri, a place of escape and indulgence. And so guests sat around a fountain in the serene garden courtyard of the fictional hotel – some even wearing their show invitation: a pair of crimson monogrammed slippers. The morning after the night before, models appeared as guests who had stayed over – or had simply never left – dressed in a wardrobe that blended an off-camera ease with West Coast flair. Amiri’s signature mix of loungewear and tailoring returned recharged, presenting robes in figured silk, smoking jackets with feathered flourishes, and pyjama sets elevated with a lived-in decadence. Knitwear was illustrated with mid-century patterns that mirrored hotel décor, wallpaper and upholsteries – when you spend so much time there, lines blur.
Tasselled key-fobs were worn through buttonholes and jackets were embellished with vintage beading, while California’s flora and fauna became intricate jacquard decoration – including bird designs drawn by artist and friend of the house Wes Lang, whose time holed up in the Chateau Marmont’s fabled Room 34 sparked this season’s narrative. Decorated silk scarves hung around shoulders with Brando charm, smoking jackets were rendered in lush velvet, and oversized collars pointed the way towards Sunset Strip, in search of new stories yet to be written.
