Rebel sojourners

Wales Bonner celebrates those who made Paris shine

Since her graduate collection, Wales Bonner has sought to honour the existence of the Black diaspora by designing luxurious pieces rich in cultural history. Debuting her collection in Paris, the designer chose to commemorate the creative minds that had once revelled in the splendour of the city. Referencing the likes of writer James Baldwin and iconic performer Josephine Baker, Bonner staged her show at L’hôtel d’Évreux: a prime example of opulent 18th-century French architecture, on the corner of Place Vendôme.

“Rebel sojourners” in decadent attire dominated the space. Ornate brooches made from baroque pearls and handmade Ghanaian beads swung like mini chandeliers from the lapels of overcoats. A silken high-collar blouse featuring artwork by artist Lubaina Himid proudly alluded to the image of the Black flaneur. Elsewhere, loose-fitting V-neck knits and collegiate-style varsity jackets referenced Sorbonne 56 – when the First International Congress of Black Writers and Artists was held.

The womenswear offering saw a continuation of her recognisable motifs. Side-split crocheted skirts featured subtle bead and cowry shell detailing – Bonners go-to decorative elements since the very beginning. Most notable was a tiered skirt made from fringed fabric for exaggerated movement: perhaps a nod to Baker’s legendary performances. The designer once again proved that Black Excellence knows no bounds, as she joined the ranks of those who inspired her by allowing Paris to inform her ever-evolving creative vision.
