Inside out

This season, Molly Goddard showed her workings

It takes a certain bravura to stage a fashion show at Christie’s. A place where money flows and many masterpieces have changed hands, you could be accused of suggesting that your collection is worthy of the same treatment and reverence bestowed upon a Picasso or a Van Gogh. But Molly Goddard is a brand happy to quell such suggestions.

What does Molly Goddard mean to most? Ruffles, tulle, and extroversion. Naturally, all of these facets were on display for SS24. Taking inspiration from the costumes department of the National Theatre, there was a focus on the concept of underskirts and underwear. Crinolines, brassieres, christening gowns, and Georgian underskirts were stripped and strapped. The ruffles exploded from seams like a peony blooming.

“I have always loved the internal workings of garments, hand sewn adjustments and finishings,” Goddard stated in the show notes. This focus on the construction of garments formed the lynchpin of the collection. It was a show that put the spotlight on the garments that are rarely seen, like looking at the lattice of the canvas rather than the paint on top. Suddenly, the location made sense.
