Women in Crystal Cubes
“My life is full of folktales and legends – art comes from thoughts and memories.” The words of pioneering Sudanese artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq frame the latest collection by Qasimi, which sees creative director Hoor Al Qasimi draw from Ishaq’s expressive, poignant artwork.
“We wanted to bring together Kamala’s prints and our classic Qasimi silhouettes and designs,” says AI Qasimi. “It is devastating that the launch of this season has come at a time when Sudan is going through such a difficult time. We hope that this will bring more awareness to the current situation and show our support for those affected. Our thoughts are with the people of Sudan.”
Women in Crystal Cubes (1984), depicting scenes of women’s lives backdropped by the hues of sun, sand and sky, reflects an earthy colour palette, while the intricate interconnections synonymous with Ishaq’s work are mirrored by artisan beading and embroidery. At other times, artworks are directly translated across silk-printed tailoring, creating vivid, tactile interpretations of Ishaq’s work.
Crystal embellishment allude to the artist’s involvement founding the Crystalist art group – which established a more conceptual framework subverting the traditional male-centred outlook – raw-edge sweatshirts and denim blazers nod to workwear silhouettes, and thin layers of organic poplin offer a contrasting delicacy. Through collaboration and craft, Qasimi continues to weave evocative stories from across the globe.
