After a twelve-year hiatus from the industry, British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng made his homecoming show one to remember. Hosting a live show at the Savoy Theatre, it was an ode to Black creative excellence across fashion, music and art but above all, it’s invaluable contribution to British culture.

Boateng paid homage to African and diaspora figures of today, enlisting a host of familiar faces to create his immersive experience and celebration, including the likes of Idris Elba, Dizzee Rascal and Nicholas Pinnock. Having begun designing in the late 80s and experienced racism in the industry first-hand, social progression and the shifting of cultural discourse has always been integral to Boateng’s practice. Famed for reinventing the suit in the 90s towards a relaxed Britpop looseness – and his celebrated stint as Givenchy Homme creative director – Boateng picked up where he left off, unpicking those heritage Saville Row tailoring codes. Cue bespoke two-piece suits cut in soft silk and lush velvet, with wide-leg silhouettes and louche personalities. Evening jackets stepped out from their designated timeframe and into the everyday, while spiritual Adinkra motifs spoke of the designer’s Ghanaian roots. Boateng also joined the host of designers taking an eco-conscious approach to their collections – all fabric having been sourced locally and with zero material deadstock.

It was an eclectic display of talent, an honouring of heritage, a night of joy and undoubtedly a fashion week highlight – the perfect way to close London this season.
