MSGM SS23: a bride you wouldn’t fuck with

Massimo Giorgetti cited two films in his SS23 show notes: Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and François Truffaut’s The Bride Wore Black. He cited them as rom-coms that unexpectedly twist into action. “I wanted to speak of an unconventional romanticism, one that is tender but also caustic,” said the designer.

It was this protagonist of fierce emotion, power and sexuality that walked the runway, wearing delicate puffy tulle dresses decorated in flowers and ruffles that revealed underwear beneath. On his moodboard, alongside an image of Uma Thurman’s The Bride character in Kill Bill at her wedding-cum-bloodbath, Giogetti also had photos of Milla Jovovich wearing a veil and a crown of flowers – the notion of marriage was distorted with MSGM energy and vigour; a bride you wouldn’t fuck with. Ideas of feminity continued to dance to this playful vision. Lingerie was scanned and printed on fleeces and jersey tees, pairs of rings hung off dresses as poetic embroidery and jumpsuits were cut with a drop neck and micro ruches, cast in acid hues they appeared like rare aquatic beings. “A wedding is a celebration of the wish to be together and have fun, of zest for life” said Giorgetti to end his show notes, “and there is nothing more MSGM than that!”
