MSGM refashion collegiate cool in an ode to Dead Poets Society

Inspired by Peter Weir’s award-winning 1989 movie Dead Poets Society, MSGM invited us to enrol at Dreamers University. Staged inside the brutalist Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Milan, Massimo Giorgetti rolled out a syllabus consisting of creative expression and collegiate cool. “Poetry, beauty, romance and love, these are what we stay alive for,” the infamous monologue of John Keating (the movie’s enigmatic professor played by Robin Williams) was read aloud by signer gIANMARIA to open the show.

MSGM’s FW23 man is a preppy, beatnik, effortlessly cool rule-breaker. Soundtracked by the controversial lyrics of Italian 80s punk band CCCP, the stomping beat was a growing juxtaposition to the dreamy demeanour of Giorgetti’s guys and girls. Campus looks arrived in the form of Oxford shirts, fleeced joggers and v-neck jumpers, while the world of American sport was refashioned in quarterback hoodies, and mascot-printed puffa jackets worn with underwear or leggings. Formality met informality as suiting silhouettes were paired with cargo trousers, knitwear and shoes were sprinkled with glitter and waistcoats were tailored in deconstructed argyle motifs. Elsewhere, berets, rough-cut neckties, baseball caps, penny loafers and sneakers neatly rounded off looks, arming these students with the power to run off and chase their futures.

A playful side was revealed via retro tokens embroidered onto sweatshirts and autographs of the MSGM team embellished onto varsity jackets. ‘I Heart MSGM’ graphics were stamped onto sweatshirts and tees –  think NYC merch – layered with oversized blazers for a chicer nod to university garms. Summarising his FW23 collection, Giorgetti said; “I like to think that this truth is confirmed every day by a generation that faces the world with the desire to change things. My work is inspired by them, including this collection.”
