Dolled up

Moschino SS17

In typical Moschino fashion, Jeremy Scott’s SS17 show boasted something perfectly plastic: a colourful cartoon world in ode to Barbie.

Gigi Hadid was the spot on opener to the show, with her sister, Bella, close behind. Silhouettes boasted tabs like the original paper dolls, those with trompe l’oeil detailing tricking the eye. Cuts were clean, relaxed or full and outlandish in their ball gown esque ruffles – all of which evoked the different personas Barbie’s taken over the years (and no doubt borrowing influence from Marilyn Monroe, Barbarella, and Eva Perron).

With coiffed retro hair as high as the lavish red curtains that decorated the catwalk, the collection was topped off with pill-popping purses, giant 2-D bows and sparkling cardboard sashes. If it sounds like the daydream of a six-year-old girl, that’s because it was. Scott’s way of appealing to the youngster in everyone.
