Nostalgia trip

Molly Goddard’s FW23 show took place in her London studio

Beginning her research in the library of Central Saint Martins, Molly Goddard went back to her roots this season. Reminiscing on the passion felt when first beginning her career as a student in the famed fashion school, Goddard delivered an unfussy ode to the joy of dressing. Taking place on-site in her studio, models exited directly from the atelier they were made, the white-washed simplicity of the backdrop creating a minimalist backdrop for her vivid creations.

Focusing on wearability, alongside her sister Alice (who styled the show) Goddard sought inspiration from the pieces in her teenage wardrobe – think leopard print Gap kids jeans, sporty knitwear found on Portobello Road or belts from Claire’s accessories – and thought about how they’d “actually wear the pieces we coveted in fashion magazines – this Charles James dress with that Ralph Lauren jumper; that Anna Molinari slip with this Cerutti coat.”

The brand’s signature voluminous silhouettes and show-stopping colour palettes were intentionally dialled down this season, opting for just a peak of a frill on the edge of a shirt or pops of colour in the form of cherry red and pastel yellow. Leopard print could be found on tulle skirts or directly replicated on a pair of straight-leg denim jeans, while an athletic stripe sat across tailored morning coats and graphic-printed knitwear. Accessories added a playful touch, with oversized ruched bags, chunky platform Mary Janes and tousled knitted headgear. Steeped in personal nostalgia and showcasing her artful craft, Goddard proved not every look needs to be a spectacle to pack a punch.
