Touch grass

Miu Miu’s woodland characters are all about self-love

A woodland undergrowth replaced the runway for Miu Miu FW26. The floor was a muddy, grassy landscape scattered with twigs and moss, while florals bloomed across the wallpapered walls of the venue. The natural versus the man-made – one of Miuccia Prada’s recurring thoughts – became literal. Perhaps she was reminding us to touch grass, perhaps she was telling us to run into the wilderness.

This season explored what Prada described as the “smallness of the body” in contrast to the vastness of the world around it – an idea rooted in intimacy and closeness with yourself. “You as a human person, you are enough,” she said backstage.

That sentiment translated into pared-back silhouettes punctuated with glints of embellishment. Many looks appeared shrunken, worn close and worn well – leathers crinkled, suits stained. Bow details nodded to the intimacy of nightwear, while bejewelled belts and floral patches offered subtle shimmer. Amber fur crept up leather trompe-l’œil coats like campfire flames, and high waists cinched with torso belts told us to strap in. Wool gloves were pulled up to the elbow like protective workwear gear, while zig zag headbands, crinkled trapper hats and fluffy chapkas crowned looks.

The Miu Miu girl is always on an adventure – this season emerging through sportier silhouettes rendered in technical nylon, fastened with adjustable toggle drawstrings, and paired with stylish hiking boots or jewel-embellished sneakers.

The casting was characteristically major. Lauren Auder, Suzanne Lindon, Chloë Sevigny – who first walked for the brand for SS96 – all walked, while Heroine 23 cover star Gillian Anderson closed the show. Concluding the FW26 season, Miuccia Prada literally and figuratively left her mark in the mud.
