hypnotherapy session

JW Anderson was a trippy Guinness fever dream

“Are you ready for the hypnotherapy session?” reads the opening line of Jonathan Anderson’s show notes, this season he isn’t interested in reality, he’s interested in that point of REM sleep where shit gets real weird. Bringing delirium and dizziness to life, Anderson delivered a collection that revelled in surrealism, inviting showgoers to slow down and drop into his dream world. As lightbulbs twinkled from the ceiling and guests got comfortable enough to slip into Anderson’s slumber, a series of voluminous thigh-grazing quilted jackets opened the show and set the tone for a collection void of the ordinary.

A master of maximalism, Anderson pushed everyday proportions to their limits. Playing on irrationality, the designer focused on enlarging, elongating, and exaggerating in the form of larger-than-life waffle bomber jackets, ties which crept to kneecaps, and engulfing leather blazers. Multicoloured silk cascaded from the collar of everyday shirting or bloomed at the waistline of slim-fitting shorts for guys, while oversized bows tied at the hips of Anderson’s form-fitting jersey dresses for girls. Cartoonish silhouettes appeared in outerwear with Polly Pocket-esque jackets and knitwear adorned with giant bubbles at the hem alongside shiny J-anchor motifs and ‘Real Sleep’ slogans, reminding us all of Anderson’s chosen theme for the season.

Taking the British quirks introduced in the designer’s FW24 womenswear collection a step further saw houses come to life as cardigans and sweater dresses became wearable houses, complete with windows and a front door. In the spirit of home comforts, the Irish designer’s closing looks debuted a collaboration with Guinness, with smiling frothy pints of the beautiful Black Stuff drawn across cashmere knitwear. Were those really walking houses and cartoon jackets, or had we just had one too many pints of Guinness? I guess we’ll never know.
