Come as you are

Isabel Marant FW22 was a grungey ode to Kurt Cobain
By Ella Joyce | Fashion | 21 January 2022

Isabel Marant’s FW22 collection smells a lot like teen spirit, riffing on the trailblazing grunge aesthetic that raged in the 90s. With Kurt as her muse, this season saw Marant update her elegant Parisian craft with an irreverent twist: cuts were baggy with pieces layered together, thrift-style plaid shirts slung around the waist and denim looked well-worn. An adventurous mix of prints and fabric all worked in tune with one another as bold stripes moshed with camo and cotton t-shirts and chunky knitwear were piled on.

As with all Marant collections, outdoorsy elements appeared: activewear accented with patchworks of shearling and boxy parkas that perhaps nodded to those Britpop brothers causing havoc across the pond at the same time as Kurt, while on foot, models strolled around in the house’s hallmark Balskee wedge trainers, reworked for menswear for the first time. Go grunge or go home.
