Gym class

Isabel Marant FW21

The class of 2021 has been through a hell of a ride. For FW21, Isabel Marant addresses confinement through a story of college students. Calling out a “new kind of uniform”, she’s picked up on the typical memes of quarantine, like dressing up from the torso up, and the legitimation of blankets as clothes. The collection was filmed at the Racing Club de Paris, where the boys goofed around in the gym hall and locker room.

The vintage interiors of the racing club coordinate with the clothes. It’s the kind of suave preppiness of old-school Ivy Leaguers that’s somehow both sepia-toned and timeless. This is mixed in with some of Marant’s favourite contemporaries: bucket hats and belt bags. And, as aforementioned, even more contemporary contemporaries: blazers with sweatpants and big sleepy scarves. Glossed, foil and paisley surfaces make it all a bit more upbeat. That’s the fundamental spirit energizing the whole presentation: an orientation toward new horizons and optimism.
