Homecoming
“Standing on the runway in Shanghai, I feel a profound sense of full circle,“ Feng Chen Wang tells us ahead of her FW26 show, having been invited to show as Shanghai Fashion Week’s special guest designer. For the Chinese-born, London-based designer, this marks a return to home soil a decade after her graduate debut in London – a moment that highlights just how far her practice has evolved.
“This anniversary is a milestone: it’s not only a celebration of a decade of experimentation and growth,” she says, hinting at the season’s defining reveal – her first full womenswear collection. Titled Two as One, the offering builds on the Two Forces narrative introduced during this season’s Paris Fashion Week, deepening her exploration of duality through mirroring and reflection.
In the centre of the runway, five live art installations placed models inside “motion ‘room’ scenarios”, each with their individual narrative. These included a live spray-painting artisan, a bedroom scene referencing the brand’s graduate collection, and a real-time DJ set soundtracking the show.
On the runway, models walked in pairs (subbing out the dog companions from the Paris show), their looks echoing and refracting one another, a visual articulation of the designer’s ongoing dialogue between past and future, tradition and innovation. In terms of the collection itself, Wang’s singular approach to material and form remained central. Drawing on traditional Chinese dress codes, she reworked familiar tropes through modern technologies and techniques. Tailoring borrowed from the structure of menswear – sharp suiting softened into fluid, more sensual silhouettes – while open knits, shearling linings and gentle, curving lines introduced tactility and ease. Elsewhere, cargo trousers, baggy denim and oversized camouflage outerwear grounded the wardrobe in everyday utility, with raw edges suggesting the passage of time and the imprint of memory.
“Today’s show honors my past and reaffirms my creative future,” she reflects. “Everything I design is made with that exact balance of memory and possibility.”
