I Feel Love

Fendi FW23 was couture disco fever – soundtracked by an original Giorgio Moroder composition

FENDI HQ housed a night to remember, as models traversed a runway bathed in spotlights, backdropped by a giant pinball machine track with disco balls tumbling down it. This was 70s glamour and decadence revisited – or “crazy, sexy, cool”, according to the brand’s show notes. This season, artistic director Silvia Venturini Fendi, took an experimental approach to the refined classicism that’s so synonymous with the house.

The level of tailoring you’d expect from one of the world’s most illustrious fashion houses was present in the longline double-breasted jackets with satin lapels and fluid, darted trousers. The playfulness came in the form of asymmetric knitted tops: some decorated with metallic appliqué to further the disco-ready vibe. Leather trousers and oversized jackets in rich brown hues were decidedly retro and brought an element of contrast to a collection rife with soft knits. Abstract cut-out shirts left models’ chests bare while see-through crew-neck jumpers were styled with jeans featuring centred seams to mimic refined slacks. As is customary, FENDI’s signature monogram permeated the range, from crocheted bucket hats to hooded ponchos with extreme fringing and a sweeping coat with a collar featuring the iconic pattern rendered from fur. While a playful twist on Fendi’s iconic baguette bag saw models holding shearling French bread sticks. With legendary Italian composer Giorgio Moroder on hand to compose the soundtrack, a new version of Gloria Gaynor’s I Feel Love fittingly closed out a show that had audience members mouthing “It’s so good.”
