Constant movement
The Etro show began with a performance. As the house lights dimmed, La Niña – the moniker of rising Neapolitan singer Carola Moccia – took to the bandstand and jolted the crowd into action with banging drums and a modified microphone that transformed her voice into an electronic keen. La Niña wasn’t just there for entertainment, she was a central inspiration to Marco de Vincenzo latest collection for Etro.
As the models marched out, they kept in rhythm with the band’s drums. The first looks, which were patterned dresses adorned with frills, worn in a distinctly Boho style with embellished jackets, looked totally alive, as if each thread was vibrating with the sound waves in the room.
“More is more” was certainly the mantra being chanted around the atelier this season. So many of the dresses looked as if a bunch of other dresses were stitched together, so voluminous and hyper were these silhouettes. Handbags were fringed, adding to the shock of constant movement. To match the music, the patterns on the clothes were suitably loud and harked back to tapestry prints. The stars of the show were the huge semi-structural sun hats, which draped so dramatically they almost enveloped the heads they sat on.
