Kim Jones recreated Christian Dior’s childhood home as an immersive catwalk

Seeing as the chance of a cheeky holiday is effectively null and void in the midst of a staggering fashion week calendar, Kim Jones decided to bring an elaborate storybook cottage/holiday home (complete with back garden) to him, in Paris. Despite many of us craving the carnage (and heinous rents) that inner-city living brings, there is a unique and wholly relaxing charm to the domesticity of country life. Because when the going gets tough, the tough crave clear blue skies, winding garden paths and delicate foliage that curls around windows and terracotta tiles.

Jones’ vision makes reference to Christian Dior’s own parental home, indulging us in a world of well-tended flower gardens and entrancing coastlines. His models breeze through the scenery in muted tones, from blues in light steel or darker than deep ocean beds to beiges that blush and greens plucked from tropical seafoam. Think fetching sunhats and palm-printed fans, quarter-zip windbreakers in shimmery silks, too fancy for a festival but perfect for a walk to the well. There were bulky backpacks too, alongside cannage stitch parkas and bobble-knit beanies.

Duncan Grant, a designer, textile artist and prominent fixture of the Bloomsbury Group, was amongst the show’s many artistic reference points. He directly inspired Jones’ pastel-hued ‘Safety Curtain’ knits, paired with slinky red-gingham shorts that resembled the lining of a picnic basket, only adding to the fairytale feel. Gardening gear also got a clear look-in, meeting loose tailoring in broach-bearing tunic tops, embroidered fleeces, pinstriped shorts and deconstructed tote-vests. Effortlessly bridging mammoth gaps between codes of technical sportswear and the classic tailoring upon which Dior built his own sweet home, Jones left us feeling fresh, reinvigorated and eager to embrace the natural world.
