Craig Green’s optimistic explorers are getting closer to their new world

Craig Green’s men are still on the hunt for a brave new world. Though it seems, for SS23, that something nondescript has been spotted on the horizon, a new territory to explore.

Suiting up for this unknown land, the designer’s future-facers looked inwards, sharing memories and collective cultural ephemera recoded under the guise of childish naivety, or moulded stronger through the lessons of adulthood. Their nomadic uniform is not one of Dune-ish shawls and billowing capes, for there is no war to be fought, nor pending doom to prepare for. Instead, they shed unnecessary weight and end up with mock-gag ties and studded leather straps, water bottles swinging loose across exposed chests.

Green’s forward-thinking reality also envisions backpacks with erect, paraglider wings – perpetually ready to take flight – and metallic breast pockets that sit upon minty parachute jackets. Templates of traditional workwear are moulded with leather ties and pocket squares in mock-origami forms. Zips are chunky and ever-extending while peak-a-boo eyelets bring the body out of strappy harness belts and dissolve the collars of dark, slender denim into loose, winding curves – all crucial underpinnings of the brand’s new environment.

Plant pattern motifs introduced new, contrasting hues in puffy trouser legs lined with braided coat hooks, as silhouettes grew wilder and more colourful by the minute, be that in fuzzy pastel pinks or homely primary blues. Denim layering was reminiscent of boilersuit silhouettes, while tabs emerging from suiting made us think of those classic cut-out and dress-up paper dolls. Closing the show, a series of conceptual looks saw avant-garde padded cloaks draped across models’ bodies, perhaps these were the tribe’s elders? Or those more scarred by the journey? What exactly Green’s omniscience is preparing us for is yet to be revealed, but as the journey continues, the designer can rest easy knowing every step looks as spectacular as the last.
