Comme des Garçons Homme Plus felt like a rip in our reality
By Barry Pierce | Fashion | 24 June 2023

It is a rare occurrence for shoes to steal a show, but it was pretty difficult to look at anything else during Comme des Garcon Homme Plus’ SS24 runway. Derbies appeared to be splitting apart, morphing into another pair of shoes while still on the feet of the models. Elsewhere, the same shoes were layered on top of each other, a deranged double-shoe that looked like some glitch in our reality. It is hard to decide whether these shoes were immensely disturbing or totally genius, so we’re going with both.

But just shoes do not an outfit make. This runway focused nearly entirely on formalwear. Single and double-breasted coats and suit jackets, tailored shorts and crisp white shirts. But, of course, this was Comme, so it wasn’t simply just going to be that. No. The suit jackets were adorned with wide-winged collars, covered in strands of hair, they were printed with jungle motifs, and even worn backwards. One particularly fabulous piece morphed from a suit jacket into a shirt, the collar of which began around the midriff, like some confusing AI-generated garment. This wackiness continued with other formal jackets, the sides of which transformed into waistcoats and trompe-l’œil printed suits featured purposefully indecipherable layers of clothing.

There were certain looks that genuinely felt like you were seeing something that has been rendered completely wrong, a rip in our reality that decided to centralise itself at this runway at this time in Paris, France. But no, this is simply just Comme; a world within itself.
