Venus as a boy

Casablanca took us back a Björk-soundtracked Ancient Greece

Casablanca’s Charaf Tajer is a globetrotter. Last season he brought us to Nigeria with a colourful collection soundtracked by Fela Kuti, this season we were off to Greece for a collection inspired by ancient statuary, titled Venus as a Boy. Naturally, Björk was on the soundtrack.

What was interesting about Casablanca’s FW24 was that the strongest looks were the ones that felt the least Casablanca. A gorgeously tailored suit modelled by Alton Mason that featured a sash belt and sandals was a standout, along with a white asymmetrical roll-neck dress modelled by Alex Consani. These pieces were a rare act of restraint for Tajer, a designer who often errs on the side of exuberance. Of course, that exuberance is what we expect from Casablanca. But the challenge that Tajer set himself, looking at Ancient Greece with all its blistering white marbles, yielded some highly impressive looks. The collection was still a cacophony of colour (and that’s exactly what the Casablanca customer wants) but in those few, refined looks, Tajer proved that he is so much more than just a showman — he is a true designer.
