Down on the West Coast

Bluemarble SS24 oozed California cool

This season marks five years of Anthony Alvarez’s Bluemarble and the Parisian house certainly delivered a collection to mark the occasion. Drawing inspiration from the designer’s own rich heritage and the changing cultural landscape, this season was “born from a West Coast vibe, developed in Paris, and discovered around the world.”

Transporting visitors to a Californian oasis via a sunset-hued show space, looks arrived in a colour palette akin to The Golden State as chartreuse yellow, dusty cobalt blue and lime green stood at the core of the collection. Nodding to the everyday ease of skate and surf culture, tailoring was cut boxy and louche, twisting classic silhouettes towards a youthful lean, while work shirts were fastened with skate belt buckles and sleeves were elongated longer than the norm in a too-cool-for-school kind of way. Honouring his own love of basketball, Alvarez also debuted the brand’s first-ever jersey marked with the number 19.

Hibiscus flowers were encrusted in rhinestones on multicoloured board shorts or airbrushed onto knitwear, while leopard print was fashioned into a coordinating two-piece. Alvarez also included allusions to superstition as motifs of Corsica’s Eye of Saint Lucie were studded onto cargo pants and images of toads signified a good luck charm. Accessories added the finishing touch in the form of 3D-printed wave sunglasses and a hybrid skate-inspired mule on foot, crafted in collaboration with Italian footwear brand Diemme.

Speaking on this season’s collection, Alvarez said: “I have always been drawn to California for its overlap of skate and surf cultures, and for the forever young mindset. More recently, I found myself fully absorbed in all the ways that locals dress to stand out. People put great effort into building a story through unique pieces, yet their looks are completely laid back.”
