Balenciaga SS24: streetview, but make it high fashion
By Alex James Taylor | Fashion | 30 May 2023

A camera is fixed on a Paris location: 10 Avenue George V. – and a rework of Édith Piaf’s Sous le Ciel de Paris by French musician BFRND floats on by. The address is important, referred to as ‘Le Dix’ by Cristóbal Balenciaga, it’s here that the legendary couturier established the Maison’s legacy in 1937, and where it continues to evolve – Demna reopened the couture salon last year, restoring it to exactly how it looked when Cristóbal was there.

On screen, the building’s doors open and models step out wearing the house’s new SS24 collection – they do so casually, chatting like workmates nipping out to lunch; in black leather moto trousers-slash-boots, full-length puffer coats that peel at the top like banana skins and cropped hoodies (loose definition of casual, true). Others walk by with their takeaway coffee, jump on the back of motorbikes or listen to their headphones, lost in their own thoughts. They wear full denim looks with trench coats hung around their necks, leather robes that could be from Dune: Part Two, defined-as-hell shoulders and shimmering, embroidered gowns. Welcome to the world of Balenciaga: “an observation of metropolitan motion.”
